Plot Structure

Dear 4 Humility,

I know that your Paper 1 for English is over. However, learning does not cease so there is no reason to stop talking about plot structure even though your compo writing exam is over, right? :-)

Anyway, I was watching a music video over the weekend and thought that the plot structure of the story played out in the music video is interesting. Take a look at the music video and see if you can
(1) identify the setting (i.e. the context of the story e.g. who the characters are, personality of the characters) Hint: one of the characters has a medical condition
(2) Development of the story (e.g. the meeting between the man and the other characters and what happened after that) Hint: part of the rising actions leading to the climax is found between 2:32 - 2:38 (timing of the video)
(3) Climax (the most intense or "exciting" moment of the video)
(4) Falling actions (the events that happen after the climax) Hint: the duration of falling actions in this video is quite short
(5) Ending (What kind of ending is it?)

Note: The music video is that of a mandarin song. For pupils who do not understand the language, you can mute your computer / notebook and just view the story. In viewing the story, you will see a man singing. He is the singer and not part of the story.

Have fun figuring out the elements of the plot structure. Do post your thoughts of the plot structure of the video as a comment to this blog entry. I look forward to reading your comments :-)

Writings from Brittany and Fiona

Murder! Bloody murder!
By Brittany

My name is Icy. Whenever I see the little stain on the couch in our living room, it makes me laugh at the memory of what had happened a few years ago...

I was siting on the couch watching "The Simpsons". My mother was out working and my father was getting his hair cut. I was alone. Suddenly, the power failed. I was so shocked that I dropped the hot-dog I was eating. "Bang! Bang! Bang!" Someone was knocking furiously on the door. I was too frightened to open the door so I curled up into a ball and sobbed.

The door suddenly gave way and the person at the door stepped in. He came near me and tapped me on my shoulder. I saw a blade reflecting the light from outside. "Murder! Bloody murder!" I screamed at the top of my lungs, hoping somebody would hear me.

"Could you be quiet? It's only me."

I recognised the voice. It was my brother, Jason. He had come home early from school. "Oh, sorry..."I said, my cheeks turning bright red. Jason walked to the fuse box and checked the fuses. After he had fixed them, the lights came back on. The "blade" I saw was a shade of mirror. It was a long time before I got over it.

Some Things Are Not As They Seem To Be
By Fiona Ang

I came back home with a heavy backpack. I stepped into the house. There was nobody at home. I shouted, " Hooray! I can have the whole house to myself!" I went into my room and put down my bag. My stomach was rumbling. I ordered food from KFC, McDonald's and Pizza Hut. While waiting, I watched my favourite programme on the television. The door bell rang. As I was walking towards the door, there was a sudden black out.

I screamed in fright. I tried to see in the dark and reached for the door. I yanked it open and saw a knife in front of me. I shouted at the person,"Don't hurt me! Don't hurt me! I come in peace" In the end, it was just the pizza man holding the knife for the pizza. Then, I went into the house and waited in the dark. I thought something touched my leg, so I screamed again. All of a sudden, the door bell sounded again. Two people shouted behind the door,"KFC and McDonald's delivery!" I told them to leave the food at the doorsteps.

After a while, I opened the door and peeked outside. There was a teenage boy pointing a gun at me. I was flabbergasted and stood rooted to the ground. My heart was beating a million times faster than before. The boy began to eat the gun. I stared in horror. Can a gun be eaten? I thought. He spoke, " Hey sister! I'm home! Are you glad to see me?" I realised it was my brother. He had just come back from the hostel.

"Why are you eating a gun?!" I looked at him strangely. "This is no gun, I found some food at the door step and took a chicken wing to eat," my brother said.

"You scared me out of my wits! First of all, I thought someone tried to kill me! Then, I thought you were going to shoot me! When is this nightmare going to end? This is the worst day of my life!" I exclaimed.

"This nightmare has just ended.... Let the party begin!" my brother said smiling, nodding his head and he lifted up the food.

"Now you're talking!" I grinned.
